“Over the past eight years Camp has become my home in every way. I honestly can’t imagine my life without it… I’ve learned a lot about myself there, and I’ve really grown as a person because of it.” -Lydia Nicholas, Camper and Counselor at Camp Chickagami.
2017 was another record breaking year here at Camp Chickagami, the summer camp and retreat center operated by the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Michigan. We welcomed 180 campers and 30 young adult staff members over eight different programs last summer and we have big plans for 2018.
While at Camp Chick, campers grow a deeper relationship with God and gain experience leading and planning worship and music for other campers and staff. For camper William Hoover, the music is one of the highlights of camp.
“I love the style and variety of music we have there, and playing guitar with the music crew is one of my favorite parts of camp,” he says of his experience.
William came to Camp Chick for the first time when he was eight years old and has returned every year since. His younger sister, Julia, was seven her first summer.
“My favorite part about camp is the evening program,” she says, “because we learn new games and have a lot of fun… The one thing I learn every year at camp is how to be myself.”
“I’ve learned a lot about others, and sharing that peace… To know we’re having an impact not only on each other’s lives but also the lives of all the kids who come is so powerful. And it’s amazing to watch them grow just as I have because of camp.” shared senior counselor, Lydia Nicholas of Grace Episcopal Church in Port Huron.
This Giving Tuesday, November 28th, we ask that you consider supporting Camp Chickagami with a gift to support our scholarship fund.
At Chickagami, no child will be turned away due to financial hardship. 51% of our campers receive scholarship aid of some kind. Others may receive help through their home congregation or through different grant organizations, Many receive aid directly from Camp Chickagami.
Giving Tuesday is a day set aside each Tuesday after Thanksgiving to recognize and give back to all of the organizations that have made an impact on your life. Each year, thousands of people participate giving gifts to the programs and organizations that inspire them.
Please join with our supporters, alumni, and other friends in making a gift to Camp Chickagami this Giving Tuesday. All gifts can make an impact and help us send kids to camp – whether it’s $5, $5 per month, or $500, every donation will assist us in our ministry.
Our goal for Giving Tuesday is $2,000. This would provide five full camper scholarships. Together, we can achieve it!
Please post and share on social media to spread the word to your camp friends and family! Let’s get connected!
