Giving Tuesday 2017

Giving Tuesday 2017

“Over the past eight years Camp has become my home in every way. I honestly can't imagine my life without it… I've learned a lot about myself there, and I've really grown as a person because of it.” -Lydia Nicholas, Camper and Counselor at Camp Chickagami. 2017 was another record breaking year here at Camp Chickagami, the summer camp and retreat center operated by the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Michigan. We welcomed 180 campers and 30 young adult staff members over eight different programs last summer and we have big plans for 2018. While at Camp Chick, campers grow a deeper relationship with God and gain experience leading and planning worship and music for other campers and staff. For camper William Hoover, the music is one of the highlights of camp.…

Giving Tuesday 2016!

Giving Tuesday 2016!

Hello, Today is Giving Tuesday, the annual celebration of giving that focuses on giving back to the organizations that have made a difference in your life. I'm hoping that you will join with us and make a donation to Camp Chickagami today for Giving Tuesday. You've heard it from me before, so I'll let the words others do the talking for me... "My daughter said,'that it was an amazing experience and would recommend anyone who wishes to go, go'. She can't stop talking about it!" -2016 Camper Parent "I attended 58 years ago, and still dream about the experiences and the physical place. Life affirming." -Alumni "One of the "thinnest" places I know. God is present there at all times!" "One of the "thinest" places I know. God is present there at all times!" -Alumni…

Connecting to God and Church

Connecting to God and Church

Camp Chickagami came into my life 4 years ago and it has changed me. A friend asked me if I would consider volunteering at Camp Chick when we moved back to Michigan. I dipped my toe in the water…literally…at a Camp Chickagami work weekend. I knew then that the waters of Lake Esau had worked their magic and I agreed to be on a Christian Formation Team that summer.  Fast forward a bit and now Transfiguration Episcopal Church has made the huge commitment of sending children to Camp Chickagami at a time that the church really did not have children attending the church. That year 14 children took us up on scholarships to attend Camp Chickagami. Again the camp by the waters of Lake Esau worked their magic on the…

Greetings, Eastern Michigan!

Greetings, Eastern Michigan!

I’d like to formally introduce myself as the newest face in the diocesan office! Some of you have probably seen me galavanting around throughout the diocese and diocesan events cheering loudly and proclaiming the good news of Camp Chickagami; for those of you who don’t know me, allow me to share a bit. I grew up in Port Huron and have been a life-long member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. I have had wonderful opportunities to be involved in camp ministries as well as other various programs throughout the province and diocese. I also have a lovely little puppy, enjoy kayaking, fresh vegetables and working with youth and young adults. For me, church really happens when we are with the youth; learning, praying and worshiping with them - really listening…

Prayer in the Pines

Prayer in the Pines

Let’s talk about prayer and camp. Every night at Camp Chickagami, after a day spent running and swimming and singing and playing, campers and staff wind down with Compline, a contemplative nighttime service out of the Book of Common Prayer. After singing and swaying along to a few calming songs like “Sanctuary” or “Jen’s Song”, they pray my favorite prayer in the entire prayer book, “Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping; that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.” Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping; that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace. Before heading off to brush teeth and climb into sleeping bags, someone starts a popcorn prayer, asking everyone to…

An Open Letter to Supporters of Camp Chickagami

An Open Letter to Supporters of Camp Chickagami

Dear Supporters of Camp Chickagami,
As spring peeked its fickle eyes up out of the snow last Monday, a fellow teacher asked me, “Brian, what is your favorite memory of your camp?” Rather than bore my co-worker with countless stories ranging from pranks with canoes to night hikes, I turned the question around:
“Oh, I don’t know; what’s your favorite memory from camp?”
“I never went to camp,” came the reply. My mind made that screechy sound that cartoons make when a car brakes really hard. Never went to camp? Really? Never went to camp? Really? I quickly started a mental assessment of how much memory is occupied solely by camp recollections. What would it be like to have more open space in my brain? Could I be more productive? A better…
